So I'm back from break...Vancouver was great to say the least, I had a good time and it was especially good to hang out with good freinds I didn't have time to hang out with during the mess that was...and still is the school year.
I learned a thing or two over spring break though..
1. Be true to yourself and don't sell out to certain ideals just because other people consider it the thing to do.
2. The finer things in life don't really need weed or alcohol. It's sad to see some people abuse that stuff to enjoy certain situations to the fullest...i don't get it sometimes...but that's just me.
School has started off relatively easy. All my classes are going great and I only get 4 days of actual school!
Anyways...here's a song for you guys, fresh out of Stones Throw Records is a song Produced by Madlib, Performed by Strong Arm Steady and one of my favorite artists Phonte.
It uses this sample, by Ace Spectrum:

Dolla Dolla Dolla
Classic J-Dilla Prouction as he samples so smooth 70's soul. This is one of my favorite samples because of the truth the track brings.
It has been used in many songs from 'Circulate' by Young Jeezy (2008) to Good Money (Prod. 9th Wonder) by Mickey Factz, I really enjoy the Mickey Factz track in fact, video at the jump...
Billy Paul - Let the Dollar Circulate (1975)
Steve Spacek- Dollar (produced by J Dilla)
Mickey Facts - Good Money (Prod. 9th Wonder)

Once again
It's Spring Break, I feel kind of lazy and kind of sick at the same time. Maybe it's just a form of relief im exerting over the fact that I never have to take that damn ecology class ever again.
Here are some samples Nujabes used for some of his work. Pretty amazing I should say!
I'll Leave it up to you guys to find the sample this time
It's kind of nice how he implemented the sample to his own drum track...pretty cool I should say
Yusef Lateef is one of my most favorite musicians. I wish he got more attention as a Jazz Musician
Once again he samples the beginning

The Good Always Die Young
So approximately a month ago one of my favorite beat-makers/producer/musicians died in a car crash. And the news was released to the english media today.
I first listened to Nujabes way back in 9th grade, when i was barely 14. His music was actually one of the main reasons why I'm such an addict to this genre, and is one of my influences for why I still play the drums/ pursue beat-making, etc..
He apparently died in a car-crash, and i didn't know how to react considering the news was released a month ago after my birthday. It still takes me back to hear that I can no longer anticipate any new material from him...ever
He had some music that just touched my soul. In some sense this is equivalent to if let's say Pete Rock, or RZA suddenly passed away...it really is just unbelievable. I'd say it's one of the worst things to wake up to...damn
Rest In Peace Nujabes...you always made some of the greatest music
...What a Crappy morning this is...

De la Soul also used Jackson as a sample in their hit 'Dinninit'. Check it.

This is from Georges Bizet's The Pearl Fishers.
These two perform a duet of that song
Song : Au fond du temple saint
Found in "The story of Gangstalicious, episode 6.
This was found when MLK and Huey Freeman were going door to door and promoting their own political party in the episode "Return of the King" (Episode 9)
Edo G. And Masta Ace - Wishing
P.S., dont pay attention to what that guy said in the beggining of this video, I'm pretty sure he has problems.

New Ambitions
I decided recently that I'm going to actually buy production equipment to make my own beats and such. I'm most likely going to work on getting an MPC500, not too much money, considering all the other MPC's are a ridiculous 1000 + bucks. But lets just see how much money I make.
I'd Figure it would be a great investment. I ain't looking to be some kind of producer, just making beats is a hobby in itself.
Oh right, here's a song for you guys
One of my favorite groups of all time, De La Soul are legends and experts at their craft. They have been making music since the late eighties, and haven't stopped since. These guys will probably be mentioned in our artists section sometime soon...
Anyways, they are a 3 man team. Even though they produce their own stuff, they sometimes had J Dilla produce a few tracks for them (who will be mentioned in the producer section, look out for that. This one is just an absolute classic.
The sample is from Swahili-land, a track performed by one of my favorite jazz pianists Ahmad Jamal. The sample comes in at 8:06 and ends at 8:10.
It takes a genius like Dilla to pick out something minuscule like that and turn it into a song like ''Stakes is High''.

Album Reccomendation
If you don't know about J-Live, well, truth is I didn't either a few months ago.
J live is a guy that immediately went to the underground when it came to rapping (first appearing on DJ Mark Farina's Mushroom jazz CD.) Then he went from being an English teacher to pursuing a career in hip-hop after he got his degree from SUNY Albany.
This guy should be regarded as one of the best Emcees throughout Hip Hop history. I know it sounds ridiculous, i thought it was too until I listened to his album The Best Part, which is one of the most complete, accomplished albums in my opinion. There's no doubt in my mind that J-Live cannot just emcee, some of his crazy lyricism just blows my mind.
Example :
"My mentality is sorta like the boomarang effect over your head, but hits you in the back of the neck; fuckin wit Live, man, what the fuck you expect?
that's like your girl tossin yer salad to get yer respect"
The production is flawless. How Flawless is it?? Let's put it this way
The track produced by DJ Premier is not even the best produced track...yeah it's that good.
I'll even post a song for you guys, you need to hear the album. If you ever see this in a store, or multiple copies of it, buy all of it, its that good.

Godfather of Beats pt 1
So I realized the other day that a lot of the pop culture of things that are new and current aka hip hop are reflections of the past in the present state take for example the magnum opus, the Godfather, you have a movie that speaks by itself for generations to come. Now you might be asking at this point, Where does the music come in?
Bam. I got you. Look no further, just listen...
Nas and Jay-Z rapping together in orchestral harmony, classic.
Black Republican" was produced by L.E.S. It samples "Marcia Religioso" from The Godfather III soundtrack.
"Black Republican" appears on Nas' Hip-Hop Is Dead
Black Republican - Jay Z and Nas
"Marcia Religioso" from The Godfather Soundtrack

Can't Keep runnin'
This sample has been very close to my heart lately as I have been trying to delve deeper into the Samba sound, jazz and hip hop cocreate to make something fuller. Take a listen....
Saudade Vem Correndo-Stan Getz
The song was recorded in 1961, "Obviously inspired by Stan Getz - Charlie Byrd Jazz Samba, this album gathered legendary guitarist Luiz Bonfá, singer Maria Toledo and Tom Jobim with Stan Getz. A historic recording!" (Jazz Samba Encore!)
Pharcyde - Runnin' (prod. J-Dilla)
Runnin' is a song performed by The Pharcyde and produced by Jay Dee. It was released as the first single from The Pharcyde's second album Labcabincalifornia in 1995.
The song samples popular jazz artist Stan Getz's "Saudade Vem Correndo", from his 1963 album "Jazz Samba Encore". The sample loops a small section of the track's bridge, layering on additions from other sections of Getz' song (such as Getz' sax solo parts). Check out more about J-Dilla in the producer section and more about Pharcyde in the Artist section.
Dilla used the opening line from RUN DMC - Rock Box
Later sampled by Mya on her song Fallin'
and finally more recently by Wiz Khalifa who in 2009, the Pittsburgh rapper sampled the song for a freestyl called "Name On A Cloud" from Flight School.
